What I had learnt during the UIR Journey

During the UIR journey, i have come in contact with internet resources that i have seen people using but i don't use them myself. Blog is one of them which i don't use and start to use when i started UIR during the vacation. UIR let me know that blogging can be use as a dairy but also can be use to share interests with people whom read the blog and some people can give comments, then people can make friends through blogging.

Reflection

Day 13

I took the test and during the test i find it hard to remember those that i learnt and remember, so this test got lesser than my first test by 1 point and this make me sad a little. I compared my portfolio with the portfolio requirements uploaded in ole and see whether i got anything missing. For today, actually i have not much comments or anything else that i can think of other than those above, so i will stop here for today.

Reflections

Day 12

I presented about what i wrote for Wiki yesterday. I gave a short brief of my introduction, my summary of the resource that i use which is the news article from
http://www.crime-research.org/news/17.03.2008/3252/ about businesses have to pay for funding a e-crime ( electronic crime or cybercrime) unit to help to fight against cybercrimes and the brief evaluation about the main website http://www.crime-research.org/ like is the website up-to-date or is the website user-friendly or is the website easy to understand. I personally feel that there is a need to set up a anti-cybercrime unit to fight against cybercrimes to make the internet a better place to surf and this will be a long-term basis, so there will be a need to ask for fundings from the industry as the government do not just have to focus on one matter but many other matters to attend to.

I also discuss about whether it is ethical to use a fake identity or take on someone's identity and how i apply ethical considerations. In my point of views, taking others' identities and use will cause problems for the ones' whom identities are being used and it is illegal. I also feel that when applying for services like discussion forums, blogs, e-mail and other services that need to use our private details, we should not disclose our private details when applying for these kinds of services.

Day 11

I studied for the test which will be held on day 13 (April 9). The topics that i need to were lecture 6 - 10 that were about evaluating internet resources which have problems of internet information, types of evaluation criteria, evaluation and comparsion of web services and evaluation of differnet internet resources. Out of these 4 parts, i feel that problems of internet information and the types of evaluation criteria were easier to understand.

Reflections

Day 10

I have to evaluate about youtube by forming groups to discuss and gave points and views about youtube and what will youtube become as the future comes. My group gave views like youtube allows chatting by giving comments when watching the videos which helps in making friends and youtube allows users to subscribe to a certain video which can know about the updates of the video when it is being updated by the author, these were 2 of the views that make youtube popular.

I personally feel that youtube in the future may have functions like chatting live and watching videos at the same time or users have video comments which is like when users give comments, rather than typing out words users can also record their comments in videos and upload to the comments section.

Day 9

I write out where i want to travel to for my dream holiday and i choose China as i had heard from many people and news about the country, so i am very curious about what people said about the country. There were many legends and myths being told and were in the country and i am interested in legends and myths especially the ones in China, so that is one of my purpose going there.

For friendster vs facebook, i list the one strength and weakness for each and also gave my opinion about what i think about the whether friendster or facebook can replace face to face social interaction. In my overall view, i think friendster or facebook cannot replace face to face social interaction as friendster and facebook are just websites and will be out dated as the time goes.

Friendster VS Facebook

Friendster and Facebook are social network services which allows users to register and make friends from all over the world.

Weakness

Friendster: the usability of friendster is not good in posting and often hangs.

Facebook: the usability of facebook is bad as there are too much stuff on the website.

Strength

Friendster: the website's accessibility is good.

Facebook: the website's content can let users interact with others and make friends easily.

In my opinion, Friendster and Facebook cannot replace face to face social interaction as we won't know the person's character that he/she is that we know in friendster or facebook and we might get into troubles.

My Dream Holiday - China

My dream holiday is to travel to China for a 3-4 weeks holiday. It has been my dream since my secondary school time to travel around China and travel to the famous places for sightseeing. Two of the famous that i really want to sightsee is The Great Wall and West Lake as i had heard many things about them on tv, news and from other people. Below are some nice sightseeing images of places in China that i got from www.travelchinaguide.com.

Great Wall of China

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

West Lake

The website give me a whole lot of information about China like cities' guides on the history of the cities, what to attractions to expect and when will be the best time to go to the cities, it also listed the top attractions that most people will go, let users to check on the hotels for accomdations, train search for users to check which train will be going to their destinated places and forum for users to ask for help. This helps a lot as i do not know much places to visit, so this website give me information on such places.

Day 8

Today the test is not so difficult but i can't remember some parts so my result wasn't so good but it wasn't too bad. I was doing one part of practical 7 which was doing evaluation practices, revising lecture 6 - 10 and i was played some games which are related to internet (crossword puzzles and quiz). Another part of practical 7 was to form groups of 3-4 people and evaluate this website called http://www.talkingcock.com/ which is a website talking about stuffs happening in singapore and there were 3 roles and my group took the foreigners role and say out our opinion as foreigners. My group also debated with other 2 groups. In my point of view, i feel that talkingcock.com can be taken as a humour website to entertain not just singaporeans but other people whom visit the website.

Day 7

It was e-learning day and revision day (have to study for test tomorrow, lecture 1 to lecture 5), so there was no lesson today. For e-learning, i have to answer 2 questions about how internet had enriched my academic life and comment about advocacy websites whether there is a need for advocacy in the school's discussion forum, so i talked how i get in contact with internet and the internet resource that helped me a lot when doing research for projects. I also give comments to one of my fellow classmate about his answer in the forum.

Reflection

Day 6

I learnt the lecture about what is evaluating internet resources and what are the criteria to take note of when we evaluate the internet resources. Some of the criterias that i can take note of when evaluating are:-

Purpose: whether the website has stated clearly the aim and objectives of the website.
Coverage: what types of materials are covered in the website, does the website cover wide range of information, whether there are any time limitations for certain periods for the website and what audience does the website want to target at and whether the website satisfy the needs of the audience.
Accuracy: checking for any biasness and any errors like grammar, spelling and typograhy in the website.
Currency: whether the website's information are up-to-date, how frequent the updates are done and do the website do any maintainance.
Accessibility: is the speed connection of the website fast to retrieve information and check the reliability of the website and is the website stable.
Usability: whether the website is easy to use, user-friendly, navigating freely, search facilities functionality and got any support for the website.

I feel that all these criteria are helpful as it helped me in my evaluation of the internet resource.
